컨트리 음악은 이유 없이 사람을 당기는 마력이 있다. 개인적으로 컨트리 음악을 좋아하지 않지만 몇몇 노래에는 엄청나게 감동하는 걸 보면 그 마력(또는 매력)을 말로 설명하기는 힘들다.
always on my mind는 특히 컨트리 음악 중 내가 가장 좋아하는 노래인데 촌스럽고 궁상스러운 가사임에도 불구하고 이상하게 마음을 잡아끄는 매력이 있다. 여러 버전 중 가장 감동을 받은 버전은 Willie Nelson이 1982년에 부른 버전인데 아마도 이게 엘비스 폐하가 부르신 것과 함께 가장 유명한 버전이 아닐까 싶다.
새벽에 라디오를 듣다 보니 이 노래가 가사 없는 연주곡 버전으로 나오고 있어서 잠시 궁상맞은 상상을 했다. 그러나 역시 이 노래는 궁상맞으면서도 멋진 가사가 없다면 매력이 80%는 반감 되는 것 같다.
